Would you like to:
Improve your map reading skills and gain the confidence to take your girls out walking, either locally or whilst away on camp or holiday?
Share ideas for walking activities with other leaders?
Find out about GPS and Geocaching?
Find out more about the Girlguiding Walking Scheme?
Work towards gaining a Level 1 Walking Qualification?
Complete a logbook walk towards your Level 1 Walking Qualification?
Enjoy a walk for pleasure in the Gloucestershire Countryside?
If the answer to any of the above is ‘Yes’, then come and join us for the Level 1 Walking Weekend in the Gloucestershire countryside. The weekend is open to adult and Senior Section members over 18.
We will be staying in Deer House at Deer Park, Girlguiding Gloucestershire’s Training & Activity Centre. Deer Park is located near Cowley, near Cheltenham in the Cotswolds.
Level 1 Walking Training
The Level 1 training course is aimed at adult and Senior Section members over 18 wishing to gain or extend their existing walking skills and the confidence to lead groups safely in normal Lowland country. You will find out about the Girlguiding Walking Scheme and can choose whether to work towards gaining a Girlguiding walking qualification (or not). The course will include both short theory and practical outdoor sessions on:
Clothing and Equipment
Choosing and planning a suitable route for your group
Navigation skills including map reading and an introduction to using a compass
Leadership responsibilities and managing your group
Assessing and managing the risks of a walk in lowland country
What to do in the event of an accident or emergency
Access and Conservation
The course doesn’t assume any existing skills / knowledge, so if you think you know very little about maps or have forgotten what you did know, that is fine!
The walking will not be fast or strenuous; you should expect to be out for at least a half-day walk on both Saturday and Sunday - a little longer on Saturday. The emphasis will be on learning by doing, supported by experienced and friendly trainers.
The fee is £70 to cover weekend food, accommodation and training. Members of Girlguiding South West England have the opportunity to apply for a leadership and training grant towards the cost of this training.
Do you fancy something a little more informal ?
Come along and enjoy some beautiful countryside in the company of like-minded people.
It is a perfect opportunity to gain some further lowland walking experience, to complete a Level 1 logbook walk or simply explore a new area and enjoy a walk in the Gloucestershire countryside.
The Leisure Walking is run informally alongside the Level 1 training. You will have the opportunity to benefit from the support of an experienced walk leader and to share ideas with others.
The fee is £70 to cover weekend food, accommodation and walk leadership.
